This house is set into a gentle slope that looks out onto the south shore of Chilmark. At the toe of the hill, in the foreground, is a coastal pond protected from the Atlantic beyond by the dunes of the barrier beach. Also within view are panoramic vistas stretching to the east and west along the shoreline.
The house is defined by a long gambrel ridge running parallel to the dune, with attached bays and an octagonal turret that project forward toward the sea. The principal living rooms plus the Master Suite are placed on the upper level, and these open onto the terrace. The terrace face has a southern exposure and is treated as a trellis that will support a profusion of roses. The first floor is developed as a recreation area and bedrooms for the owner’s grandchildren.
