This house has pride of place on the bluff at West Chop, adjacent to the bathing pier, with spectacular views of Vineyard Sound and of the Elizabeth Islands. A venerable old shingled structure dating from the late 1890s, it had suffered from years of neglect and was in danger of falling apart, as years with leaking roofs had caused severe structural damage.
We were asked to repair and subtly transform the structure. Our brief was to carefully add to and restore the existing house while making sure that from the exterior, the house would look as if it were original and to remake the interior while honoring the spirit of its original. We salvaged and restored windows, trim elements, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry, flooring, etc. Where restoration was impossible new materials were combined with the old, and faux finishes were applied. The best of the existing floor plan was salvaged, too, and the worst was removed and opened up to provide previously unavailable views of the western shore.
The garden was relaid and planted per our designs. The landscape plan is developed as a series of outdoor spaces, or rooms, that respond to the changes in the sun and breezes throughout the day.
