Fern is a florists shop located in downtown Boston on Massachusetts Avenue, across from the Christian Science Church campus and adjacent to Symphony Hall. The storefront is now a bright spot in an otherwise-grim 1970’s era commercial storefront arcade, designed as a counterpoint to the adjacent concrete and bronzed aluminum storefronts.
Conceived of as a conservatory, the storefront’s piers support trellis-work reminiscent of garden structures. The broad mahogany-and-glass open up and fold inward upon themselves, opening the shop up to passerby and bringing the outside in. The shop provides a welcome to pedestrians, an oasis.
