Set onto a natural plateau on one of Chilmark’s rolling hills, this house is designed to encompass panoramic views of Quitsa Pond, the south shore cliffs and ocean at Gay Head plus northerly views of the Elizabeth Islands.
The rambling gambrel-roofed house is laid out in a splayed fashion so as to allow each wing inner privacy with separate and private exterior courtyards. Each wing has individual and dramatic views out to the landscape and water beyond.
Adjacent is a small cottage that frames the drive entrance to the site. An understudy to the main house, this cottage serves as an artist’s studio and gardener’s cottage, sheltering a cutting garden behind.

Artist’s studio, this little house serves the well-tended gardens that surround it. Its entrance, framed with its trellised arbor, is set a short walk across the lane to the main house, an easy summer commute from house to studio.
