OUTDOOR DETAILS

At the garden level the lightness of the window sash plays against the strength of the fieldstone wall in which it is set; similarly the deeply set garden windows are placed as focal points in the shade, framed by the openings in the trellis. Above, the round oculus window with its delicate scalloped tracery and elegant carved keystones is a foil to the rustic cedar shingled wall surface. The hefty mahogany handrail terminates in an deftly turned round.

This shingle-style home is set into the gentle slope of Chilmark’s South Abels Hill, taking in panoramic views of Martha’s Vineyard south shore, a coastal pond and barrier dunes.

The long axis of the house’s gambrel roof runs east to west, parallel to the shore, providing a spine along which are arranged gambrel bays and the octagonal turret that project onto the deck and out toward the garden. The deck provides an outdoor room at the upper level, open to the principal living spaces and the master suite behind; at the west end of the deck is a raised octagonal sitting area. The walls that support the upper deck are treated as a garden trellis for growing a profusion of roses. Underneath the deck is a shaded seating and play space with a story-telling area for the grandchildren, plus a spectacular shower beneath the octagonal terrace.

The interiors are developed at the highest level of detail with intense focus on proportions, trim detail and craftsmanship.
